I've been a gluten-free traveller since July 2019 and so far Vienna has probably been the easiest place to find genuinely tasty gluten-free food. In fact, there were almost too many options and I didn't have time to try all the restaurants on my list.
Out of the restaurants I did try, these were the best for gluten-free travellers.
While I am confident that all of these restaurants are safe for gluten-free travellers, I am not coeliac, so I wouldn't necessarily know if I had eaten gluten by accident. Staff in the restaurants I list below were always happy to help and allergies seemed to be well understood in general. If in doubt, use the German "glutenfrei" to double-check if a dish is safe to eat.
Zum Wohl
If you think that being gluten-free means you have to miss out on a traditional Wiener Schnitzel, think again. Zum Wohl does a gluten-free version that is coated in crispy batter and served with potato salad. You even have the option to wash it down with a beer as this restaurant is 100% gluten-free. If wine is your drink of choice, Zum Wohl has an excellent selection and the friendly staff are more than happy to help you choose.
In addition to being completely gluten-free, Zum Wohl is also lactose-free and there are lots of options for vegetarians and vegans.

Gasthaus Nestroy
Gasthaus Nestroy has a separate gluten-free menu which also includes Austrian staples like schnitzel. I'd already had my schnitzel fix at Zum Wohl so I went for the pumpkin risotto instead. It was probably a little stodgier than a risotto should be, but I thoroughly enjoyed this cheesy creamy hug in a bowl!
Gasthaus Nestroy also gives gluten-free travellers a choice of drinks, with at least one gluten-free beer on the menu.
If you're looking for comfort food in a cosy and rustic setting, Gasthaus Nestroy is the restaurant for you.

pumpui
Pumpui is a cool Thai restaurant that's a popular post-work dinner spot for locals. Like many restaurants in Vienna, Pumpui has an allergen key on the menu so you're saved the trouble of asking which dishes are gluten-free. The gluten-free main courses are pad thai, khua kling curry and laab, each served with your choice of meat.
The staff here were lovely and incredibly patient with our very basic German.

doÑa irma
One of the best things about spending time in big cities is the variety of cuisines on offer, and I'm always particularly excited when one of those cuisines is Mexican. Doña Irma serves hearty portions of traditional Mexican food in a fun and friendly atmosphere, and as many of the dishes are corn-based, it is very gluten-free friendly.
As much as I love tacos, I wanted to try something different so I went for sopes on my first visit to Doña Irma. They were quite a revelation - fried disks of corn dough topped with refried beans, pulled pork, lettuce, tomatoes, soured cream and cheese. Simultaneously rich and fresh; it was love at first bite.
The enchiladas were also excellent, and in case you need any more encouragement to book a table, Doña Irma has a cocktail happy hour five days a week.

vapiano
Vapiano is a large chain with restaurants all over the world including Germany, the UK, the US, China and Brazil. I usually avoid chains like this and prefer to spend my money in small locally-owned businesses, but Vapiano does do a great job with dietary requirements and is a quick and affordable option.
Vapiano serves gluten-free versions of both pizza and pasta. There's no need to be concerned about cross-contamination with pasta dishes as you watch your meal being made and the chefs change their gloves and use a separate pan for gluten-free orders. You don't get to watch the pizzas being made so pasta is probably safest if you're celiac.
Vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for at Vapiano.

Indien Village
From the mouthwatering food (most of which is gluten-free friendly) to the impeccable service, I can't praise Indien Village highly enough and I genuinely miss eating at this restaurant.
My attention is usually focussed on mains and desserts, but I couldn't resist ordering a starter when I saw that the paneer pakoras were cooked the traditional way, in chickpea flour. I followed this with the navrattan vegetable curry which was mild yet complex, and completely different from the vegetable curries I'm used to ordering in the UK. I love vegetarian Indian food and I wish I'd had time to try all thirteen of the delicious-sounding vegetarian mains on offer at Indien Village.

erich
This hip cafe-bar, with its low lighting and graffiti wall, is the kind of place that makes me question whether I'm cool enough to enter. Regardless of the answer, I went in, and the atmosphere wasn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be.
Erich serves breakfasts, bowls and grilled sandwiches during the day, and tacos and light bites in the evening. Gluten-free travellers should be safe eating most of the tacos and bowls, as well as a few of the breakfast options. There are also options for vegetarians and vegans.
I didn't take advantage of the drinks at Erich, but if I ever return, I will definitely order a G&T from the extensive gin menu.

Cafe Ansari
Cafe Ansari’s food is refreshingly different from what else is on offer in Vienna, taking inspiration from the Mediterranean and Georgia. I've wanted to go to Georgia for years so I loved having my first taste of Georgian flavours, especially the pomegranate seeds that complemented my pork dish so well.
Gluten-free travellers can also enjoy dessert at Cafe Ansari with a generously sized duo of crème brûlée on the menu.
Around half of Cafe Ansari's menu is gluten-free friendly, but it's fairly meat-heavy. If you're vegetarian or vegan, be sure to check the menu on their website before visiting.
